Chinese Culture People (By Editor-in-chief Wang Baosheng)--The exhibition “Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship—Art Exhibition of Painting and Calligraphy by Famous Chinese Contemporary Cultural Guru Huo Chunyang”, will be held at the Central Gallery of Ginza, Tokyo, Japan on August 7-12 for the ends as the title suggests. The event is organized by Chinese Culture People Magazine and supported by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Ministry of Culture of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Japan, Japan-China Friendship Parliamentarians' Union, Japan-China Friendship Association, Japan-China Economic Association, Japan-China Friendship Center, Japan-China Cultural Exchange Association, the Association for the Promotion of International Trade, ArtGroup-International, All-Japan Calligraphy Union, Union of Chinese Residing in Japan, College of Chinese Calligraphy, Japan SINCER Corporation.

China and Japan are friendly neighbors separated only by a narrow strip of water and share cultural universality. Chinese calligraphy and painting is an important carrier of traditional Chinese cultural heritage, and it is also a bond for cultural exchanges between China and other East Asian countries such as Japan.

Huo Chunyang, doctoral supervisor from Chinese National Academy of Arts, researcher from China National Academy of Painting, curator of the art museum of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, and vice president of Tianjin Artists Association, is the most representative painter for the traditional freehand bird-and-flower painting of China. In his art career of more than 50 years, Huo has admired the traditional Chinese literati painting, obtained academic and cultural inspiration from traditional Chinese culture, and devoted himself to the rejuvenation of the humanism in the Chinese painting.

In his art practice, Huo has taken it as his mission to “purify human hearts”, respected the spirit of “neutrality and impartiality”, and pursued a calm and flexible mind in art creation. His paintings, showing richness, complexity, luxuriance and heaviness respectively through soberness, simplicity, sparsity and lightness, are contemporary “untrammelled works”, with deep artistic conceptions, and fully illustrate the painter’s profound knowledge of Chinese culture, his deep, clever and unique understanding of the art spirit in the Chinese painting and of traditional Chinese philosophy, and his ideas about the life.

Huo has been teaching in the department of the Chinese painting at Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts. In the teaching practice, he has emphasized the importance of cultivation in fields “other than the painting”, stressed that “the quality of a painter can reflect that of a painting and vice versa”, and underlined the integration between the body and the mind, the skill and the art, the content and the format, and the theme and the technique. When Chinese aesthetics was challenged by multiculturalism and at the risk of alienation, Huo analyzed the problems that the contemporary bird-and-flower painting was confronted with, and published “Nine Arguments from Chunyang”, solving many puzzles concerning the inheritance and innovation of the contemporary Chinese painting from the philosophic perspective, enhancing the resilience of Chinese culture, and improving people’s confidence in Chinese culture. It seems that he was working on a temporal cause in a transcendent manner, “creating morality in the world between heaven and earth, and finding the meaning of life for human beings, carrying forward the lost academic traditions of sages, and building peace for generations to come”.

Huo has engaged in the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, and visited countries such as Japan, the United States, France, Germany, Belgium, and Australia to offer lectures and exhibitions. Taking the art as a bridge, he has contributed his wisdom and efforts to the diffusion of excellent traditional Chinese culture and the internalization of Chinese culture.

The year of 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the conclusion of the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship when the improvement and development of bilateral relations continue to encounter important opportunities. To commemorate the 40th anniversary themed “Advancing Peaceful Development and Seeking Common Friendship for Generations", inherit the tradition of folk culture exchange between China and Japan, and build a platform of friendly exchanges for artists between the two countries, the famous Chinese contemporary cultural guru Huo Chunyang's calligraphy and painting art exhibition plays an active role in enhancing mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, and contributes to the further improvement and development of Sino-Japanese relations under the new situation.(Chinese Culture People)
